You may receive an "Internal Error 2349" error message when you install Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005 (884462)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002, Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, or Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, you may receive the following error message:
Internal Error 2349.
You receive this error message if the System32 folder on your computer contains version 1.0.603.0 or an earlier version of the Cabinet.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, make sure that version 5.0.2147.1 or a later version of the Cabinet.dll file is located in the following folder:

%WINDIR%\system32\

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Click Start, click Run, type %WINDIR%\system32\, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the Cabinet.dll file in the %WINDIR%\system32\ folder, and then rename the file as Cabinet_backup.dll
  3. Put version 1.0.603.0 or an earlier version of the Cabinet.dll file in the System32 folder, and then try to install Visual Studio .NET.
You receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
