Error message when you move a resource group from a Windows 2000 node to another Windows 2000 node on a Windows 2000-based cluster: "Online, volumes not ready. Error: 87" (883633)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

SYMPTOMS

When you move a resource group from a Microsoft Windows 2000 node to another Windows 2000 node on a Windows 2000-based cluster, the move operation fails. Additionally, an error message that resembles the following is logged in the %windir%\Cluster\Cluster.log file:
000009e0.000007f8::2004/05/06-13:35:02.875 Physical Disk <Disk R:>: [DiskArb]------- DisksOnline -------.

Note The following line in the error message occurs 24 times:
000009e0.000007f8::2004/05/06-13:35:05.187 Physical Disk <Disk R:>: Online, volumes not ready, error: 87. Retrying
This problem frequently occurs when you start the move operation after another Windows 2000 node has been restarted.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the disk online program times out when it tries to verify that the Mount Manager (Mountmgr.sys) has added the resource group volume to the Plug and Play list.

When you move a resource group, the Mount Manager starts to add the volume to the Plug and Play list. Meanwhile, the disk online program repeatedly tries to verify that the Mount Manager has finished adding the volume. However, the verification process has a 48-second time-out period. After the time-out period expires, the resource group is not moved if the disk online program cannot detect that the volume has been added to the Plug and Play list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

There is a design change in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 that affects the way that the disk online program verifies the volume information. When you move a resource group from a Windows Server 2003 node to another Windows Server 2003 node, the disk online program directly checks the Plug and Play list to see whether the volume has been added. After the volume is added, the disk online program verifies that the volume is ready.
