INTRODUCTIONWindows XP Service Pack 2 introduces new behavior in Microsoft Internet Explorer that may affect users of Outlook Web Access. This article discusses known issues that may occur when you use Outlook Web Access on a Windows XP SP2-based computer. MORE INFORMATIONHow to use Outlook Web Access on a Windows XP SP2-based computerTo connect to Outlook Web Access on a Windows XP SP2-based computer, you must use one of the following methods. - Method 1 In Internet Explorer, add the URL for the Outlook Web Access Web site to the Allowed Sites list for the Pop-up Blocker. We recommend this action. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.
- In the Address of Web site to allow box, type the URL of the Outlook Web Access Web site.
- Click Add, and then click Close.
Note We recommend that you use method 1. Method 1 enables the Pop-up Blocker to continue to function on other Web sites. - Method 2 You can select the Basic client instead of the Premium client when you log on with Forms-Based Authentication.
Note If you do not have sufficient permissions to use method 1, we recommend that you use method 2. (For example, you may not have sufficient permissions to use method 1 if you are using a kiosk computer.) - Method 3 You can lower the Filter level. This enables some pop-up advertisements to appear, but some Outlook Web Access functionality may no longer work as expected.
Additionally, you can turn off the Pop-up Blocker in Internet Explorer. However, we do not recommend this action. Known issuesThe filter level affects functionality If the Pop-up Blocker is enabled in Internet Explorer, and if the filter level is set to the default setting of Medium, and if the URL for Outlook Web Access is not in the Allowed Sites list, the functionality of Outlook Web Access may no longer work as expected. Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003The following issues occur only with Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003. The Pop-up Blocker blocks the following: - The New Folder action.
- The Attachments dialog box.
- The New Message button in the Find Names dialog box.
- The Send Mail to Contact button on the Contact form.
- Reminders and new e-mail notifications.
- The following commands on the shortcut menu for mailbox items:
- Open
- Reply
- Reply All
- Forward
- Create Rule
- Move/Copy
Additionally, you may see the following behaviors: - In the in the Find Names dialog box, if you select a user name and then click Properties, or if you double-click a user name, a script error occurs.
- If you clicking Check Names on the Edit Rule form, and if any names cannot be resolved, a script error occurs.
- If you double-click a resolved user name and then click Show Blocked Pop-up, you receive the following message: Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page?
You will lose all changes made since your last save.
Press OK to continue, or Cancel to stay on the current page.
If you click OK on this message, the active window is replaced by the Properties window, and you lose any changes that you made since the last time that you saved.
Exchange Server 5.5The following issue occurs only with Exchange Server 5.5: - When you view a message, the Reply button is blocked by the Pop-up Blocker.
The Outlook Web Access S/MIME control no longer functionsThe following information applies only to the Outlook Web Access S/MIME control in Exchange Server 2003 and in later versions of Exchange Server. - After you upgrade to Windows XP SP2, Outlook Web Access may not be able to detect that the S/MIME control is installed. This behavior causes the following:
- The Encrypt message contents and attachments button on the compose message form is not available.
- The Add a digital signature to this message button on the compose message form is not available.
- The E-mail Security area of the Outlook Web Access Options form indicates that the S/MIME control is not installed. Only the Download button is available.
- You cannot drag attachments into the Compose Message form.
An update is available to resolve this issue.

The S/MIME control does not load in OWA when you are running the Exchange Server 2003 OWA client on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer
Note After you install the Exchange hotfix mentioned in article 883543, you must download the updated S/MIME control on the Windows XP SP2 computer. To do this, follow these steps: - Log on to Outlook Web Access.
- In the lower right pane, click Options.
- In the E-mail Security area, click Download.
Miscellaneous changesAfter you upgrade to Windows XP SP2, some features of Outlook Web Access behave differently. These changes do not affect functionality and do not require that you take any actions. Examples of changes in Outlook Web Access include the following: - Dialog boxes, such as the Message Options dialog box, display a status bar at the bottom of the dialog box.
- When you download the S/MIME control from the Options page in Outlook Web Access, the File Download - Security Warning dialog box appears. Internet Explorer in Windows XP SP2 has changed the Open button in this dialog box to Run. Users should click the Run button when the File Download - Security Warning dialog box appears.
- When you connect to an Exchange Server 2003 computer by using Outlook Web Access, you cannot open the Change Rules window by double-clicking the rule that you want to edit or modify. To edit or modify the rule, click the rule, and then click Change Rule.
