User folders are removed when an administrator tries to reinstall the Systems Management Server 2.0 client (883492)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SYMPTOMS

If a low-rights user uses Logon Client Installation to install the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 client, and an administrator later tries to reinstall the client, the Delpath.exe program may delete a user folder instead of the temporary SMS client folder. The folder that the Delpath.exe program deletes may be a user's Documents folder. For example, you may experience this problem if the following conditions are true:
  1. A low-rights user, "Testuser", logs in and runs the Smsls.bat file.
  2. Testuser does not have permissions to install the SMS client software to the \Windows folder. The SMS client base components are installed to the \%TEMP% folder. The %TEMP% environment variable is set to C:\Documents and Settings\Testuser\Local Settings\Temp.
  3. Testuser adds personal documents to a folder that is named C:\Documents.
  4. Testuser experiences an unrelated problem and calls the Helpdesk.
  5. A Helpdesk administrator logs on to the client computer. The Smsls.bat file runs as part of the logon process.
  6. The Logon Client Installation process detects that it can remove the temporary SMS directory and calls the following command line:
    C:\Windows\MS\SMS\Core\Bin\Delpath.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Testuser\Local Settings\Temp\MS
  7. The Delpath.exe program detects the C:\Documents folder as the parameter and deletes the C:\Documents folder that contains the user's files. The correct call to the Delpath.exe program is logged in the Wn_logon.log or Nd_logon.log file in the \%windir%\MS\SMS\Logs folder on the client computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Logon Client Installation process passes a temporary SMS installation path that contains spaces to the Delpath.exe process. The Delpath.exe program detects only the first part of the path, before the first space, as the temporary SMS folder. The Delpath.exe program then tries to delete the folder. If a user folder matches the folder name that the Delpath.exe program tries to delete, the program deletes the non-SMS directory.
