The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2)

INTRODUCTION

By default, Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is enabled in Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. For a Windows Services for UNIX product to work correctly with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, you have to make sure that the required ports are open. The required ports are described in the "More Information" section.

MORE INFORMATION

For a Windows Services for UNIX product to work correctly, you have to make sure that the following ports for each Service are open.

Portmapper and related services for Network File System (NFS)

Server for NFS

The following ports have to be open:

Portmapper: TCP, UDP 111
Status: TCP, UDP 1039
Nlockmgr: TCP, UDP 1047
Mountd: TCP, UDP 1048
NFS Server: TCP, UDP 2049

Mapping Server

The Portmapper port has to be enabled. The Mapping server listens on different ports.

You have to take the following actions:
  • You have to enable the Portmapper port TCP/UDP 111.
  • You have to add Mapsvc.exe to the firewall allow list, also known as the Exceptions list.

You can also add a port or a program to the Exceptions list. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
    2. Right-click the network connection that is bound to the active network card, and then click Properties.
    3. On the Advanced tab, click Settings.

Make sure that On (recommended) is selected.
    4. Click the Exceptions tab.
    5. Open a port. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Click Add Port.
      2. To open ports for a particular program, click Add Program, and then point to the .exe file for that program.
PCNFSD UDP port

The Portmapper port and the PCNFSD UDP port have to be open.

Portmapper: TCP, UDP 111
PCNFSD: UDP 1035

Microsoft Interix daemons

By default, Interix daemons are not enabled. When the Interix daemons are enabled by using the Inetd.conf file, the corresponding port has to be open in ICF. The corresponding port can be found at /etc/inetd.conf. The corresponding port numbers for the services can be found at /etc/services.

Telnet

TCP port 23 has to be open.

Password synchronization

To permit UNIX-to-Windows password synchronization, the corresponding port on the Microsoft Windows side has to be open.

Port type: TCP
Default port: 6677

You can change the port type and the default port by using the administrator user interface. If you want to use any other port than the default port, you have to make sure that other port is open.

Windows Services for UNIX 2.0 RSH server

TCP Port number: 514

File sharing and print sharing

You have to enable file sharing and print sharing in ICF.
