Works: Data Truncated When Importing Text Files into Database (88675)

SUMMARY

When you save a Works for Windows database or spreadsheet file as text, and the size of a record or row is 2 kilobytes or greater, some of the information in the row or record will be lost. There is a similar 2 KB per-record or per-row limitation when you open a text file in Works for Windows as a database or spreadsheet file.

Size limits for text files are by design. This limitation does not apply to saving or opening files in the standard Works format. This feature is under review and will be considered for inclusion in a future release.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Create a new database file with nine one-character field names (for example a:, b:, c:, and so on).
  2. Format each to have a width of 252 (this will give the maximum of 255 characters per field).
  3. In each of the nine fields, type 252 characters. (A quick way to do this is change to list view, type 252 characters in the first field, and click Fill Right from the Edit menu to fill the other eight fields.)
  4. Save the file in either the Text And Tabs or Text And Commas format and close the file.
  5. Open the file as either a database or spreadsheet.
The information in the first eight fields (or columns) will appear correctly. However, the information in the ninth field (or column) will be truncated.
