You can access CD-R and CD-RW drives after you enable the "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" Group Policy setting in Windows XP (875555)

SYMPTOMSAfter you enable the Prevent access to drives from My Computer Group Policy setting on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you can still access the CD-R and CD-RW drives. Note The Prevent access to drives from My Computer setting is located in the following folder in the Group Policy MMC snap-in: User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
- Click Add.
- Under Available Stand-alone Snap-ins, click Group Policy, and then click Add.
Note Click Browse to locate Group Policy objects (GPOs) that are linked to sites, domains, organizational units, or computers. The default Group Policy object is Local Computer. Use this object to change the settings on the local computer, or click Browse to locate GPOs on other computers. - Click Finish, click Close, and then click OK to close the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box
- Expand User configuration.
- Under User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then expand Windows Components.
- Under Windows Components, click Windows Explorer.
- Locate and then double-click Remove CD Burning features.
- Click the Setting tab, click Enabled, click Apply, and then click OK.
- Close the Group Policy snap-in.
