Removable Storage service error appears in the system event log when you connect a device to Windows Server 2003 (875528)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect a device, such as a USB drive or another type of removable drive, to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, an error message that is similar to the following appears in the system event log:

USB CDROM:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Removable Storage Service
Event Category: None
Event ID: 111
Description: RSM could not load media in drive Drive 0 of library TEAC CD-210PU USB Device.

Note The error message may vary with the type of device that you connect.

The error is logged, even though the device is working correctly.

CAUSE

This error may occur when you connect a device that does not support the media ejection lock/unlock (SCSIOP_MEDIUM_REMOVAL) operation code. The error occurs because of a limitation in the Removable Storage component. Removable Storage does not expect the device to be connected, because the device does not support the media ejection lock/unlock operation code.

RESOLUTION

While there is currently no resolution for this behavior, no harm is done by the behavior. This event log message may safely be ignored for devices that do not support the media ejection lock/unlock (SCSIOP_MEDIUM_REMOVAL) operation code.

Note If this error occurs when you connect a device that does support the media ejection lock/unlock operation code, contact your device vendor for support with the problem.
