You receive a "Stop 0x000000CE" Stop error message when you change the resources of a parallel port device in Device Manager on your Windows 2000-based computer (875430)

SYMPTOMSWhen you change the resources of a parallel port device in Device Manager,
your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer may unexpectedly restart. You may receive the following Stop error message: Stop 0x000000CE CAUSEThis issue may occur when a printer is installed on the parallel port of your computer and the printer driver is loaded in memory.WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, remove the printer that is installed on the parallel port before you change the resources of the parallel port device, restart your computer, and then reinstall the printer and the driver. To remove the printer, follow these steps: - Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Right-click the printer that is installed on the parallel port, and then click Delete.
- Disconnect the printer cable from the parallel port.
To reinstall the printer, follow these steps: - Turn off your computer.
- Connect the printer cable to the parallel port.
- Turn the printer on.
- Start your computer.
The printer may install automatically. - If the printer does not install automatically, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Double-click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard, and then click Next.
- Click Local Printer, verify that the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box is selected, and then click Next.
Based on the printer that you are installing, a "Found New Hardware" message or the Found New Hardware Wizard is displayed to notify you that the printer is detected and that installation is started. - Follow the instructions on your computer to complete the printer installation.
