"No Updates Were Installed" error message when you try to install Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 1 from the Windows Update Web site (875339)

SYMPTOMS

You may find that you cannot install Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 1 (SP1) from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site. After you click Install Now to install Windows SharePoint Services SP1, you receive the following error message on the Windows Update Web page:
No Updates Were Installed
When you view the Ohotfix(Number).log file that is located in the %Temp%\Ohotfix folder on the hard disk, you see the following entries:
The update failed.
Finished processing the update on Date at Time.
Encountered error 1603 while updating.
Error 1603 not ok to report to Setup Watson.
Note You install the service pack by either logging on to the server directly or by connecting through a console session. If you install the service pack while you are logged on using a Remote Desktop, the OHotfix log files that are located in your %Temp%\Ohotfix directory will be deleted after you log out and then log back on again.

You can create a console session from the computer that you are logged on by clicking Start, clicking Run, and then typing mstsc -v:<<servername>> /F -console in the Open box, where <<servername>> is the server that you want to connect to.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • One or more files in your existing installation of the original release version of Windows SharePoint Services on the computer is missing or is damaged.
  • The folder that contains the source files for Windows SharePoint Services is missing or is modified to use a different name. By default, the source files for Windows SharePoint Services are stored in the following folder on the hard disk:

    %ProgramFiles%\STS2Setup_1033

    If the STS2Setup_1033 folder is missing or is renamed, Windows SharePoint Services cannot repair the installation of Windows SharePoint Services on the computer. When you try to install Windows SharePoint Services SP1, you experience the symptoms that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, repair the installation of the original release version of Windows SharePoint Services on the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Run the Setup program for Windows SharePoint Services by using the Stsv2.exe file that you downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center when you installed the original release version of Windows SharePoint Services on the computer. To obtain this file, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/f/9/9f93d3bc-097c-48bc-88d6-7f612582f131/STSV2.EXE

  2. On the Maintenance Mode Options page, click Reinstall or Repair, and then click Next.
  3. On the Reinstall or Repair Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 page, click Reinstall Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, and then click Install.
  4. After Windows SharePoint Services is successfully installed on the computer, connect to the Windows Update Web site, and then install Windows SharePoint Services SP1.
