  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new Recipient Update Service or a new address list by using Exchange System Manager in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Exchange System Manager
Invalid Argument
Facility: Win32
ID no: 80070057
Exchange System Manager

CAUSE

This issue occurs when some Microsoft Active Directory directory service objects are missing. The missing display specifiers (DisplaySpecifiers) are:

CN=409,CN=DisplaySpecifiers,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com

Note In the 409 container, there are many objects that start with "msExch." The 409 container is for the English language.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rerun the Exchange 2003 setup /forestprep command to re-create the missing display specifiers. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:

    drive:\setup\i386\setup /forestprep

In this command, drive is the letter of the computer's CD drive.
  2. In Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard, click Next two times.
  3. On the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator Account page, in the Account box, type the name of the user or of the group that is installing Exchange, and then click Next.

MORE INFORMATION

The display specifiers are stored in Active Directory. They can be viewed by using a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) tool such as ADSI Edit (AdsiEdit.msc). ADSI Edit is included in the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Support Tools. The Support Tools are located in the Support\Tools folder on the Windows Server 2003 installation disc.
