FIX: Event ID 23 is repeatedly logged in the Application log on a computer that is running BizTalk Server 2004 (873442)

SYMPTOMS

Event ID 23 is repeatedly logged in the Application log on a computer that is running Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004. You receive the following event message: Event Type: Error
Event Source: EDI Subsystem
Event Category: BizTalk Server 2004
Event ID: 23

Time: time
User: N/A
Computer: computername
Description: Error encountered: ERROR (44): A database error occurred. Contact the system administrator.

If you restart the BizTalk Base Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Service, the event is no longer logged.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You use the Base EDI Adapter with BizTalk Server 2004.
  • BizTalk Server 2004 experiences a momentary loss of connectivity with a computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For example, this problem occurs if BizTalk Server 2004 runs in a clustered environment, and BizTalk Server 2004 fails over to another cluster node.

Hotfix installation information

After you extract this hotfix package, follow these steps to install this hotfix:
  1. Run the Setup program to install the main hotfix files.
  2. Copy the Genins.exe file from the location where you extracted the hotfix package to the following folder:

    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004\EDI\Subsystem

  3. Copy the Updateedi.bat file and the Updateedi.sql file from the location where you extracted the hotfix package to the following folder:

    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004\EDI\Adapter\Bin\Config

  4. Run the following batch file:

    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004\EDI\Adapter\Bin\Config\UpdateEDI.bat

Note After you complete these steps, you may have to restart the following services:
  • BizTalk Base EDI Service
  • BizTalk Service BizTalk Group: BizTalkServerApplication
Replace BizTalkServerApplication with the name of the default BizTalk Server host. This name may be different on your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was corrected in BizTalk Server 2004 Service Pack 1.
