IIS may not respond after you install MS04-021 on an IIS 4.0 server (873401)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you install the MS04-021 security update on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 server that is running Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0, and certain Internet Server API (ISAPI) filters are installed, the Inetinfo.exe process may not respond, and an access violation exception may occur.

On servers that are experiencing this problem, the Drwtsn32.log file contains a fault at the following line:
FAULT ->68c16296 39b8ac010000     cmp     [eax+0x1ac],edi        ds:000001ac=????????

CAUSE

This problem occurs when an ISAPI filter registers for the SF_NOTIFY_PREPROC_HEADERS notification and handles the request from this notification. In this case, IIS tries to access a non-existent metadata object, and an access violation occurs.
