Only the first occurrence of the NUMPAGES field is updated when you try to update the fields in the body of your Word 2003 document (873356)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to update the fields in the body of your Microsoft Office Word 2003 document, only the first occurrence of the NUMPAGES field is updated. If you try to update the fields in the document body again, only the second occurrence of the NUMPAGES field is updated. To update all the NUMPAGES fields that are contained in the body of your document, press F9 for each NUMPAGES field that appears in the body of your document.

To update the fields in the body of your document, press CTRL+A, and then press F9.

Note This problem may also occur if you click Print Preview on the File menu, and then close Print Preview.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Microsoft Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

This problem is corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

After you install the service pack, follow the steps that are listed in the "Resolution" section of the article to set the UpdateAllNumpages registry value and to enable the hotfix.

Important If you activate this hotfix, you may experience a different problem with the NUMPAGES field in the header or in the footer of your document. For more information, see the "More Information" section.

To enable this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word 2003.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options

  4. After you select the key that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type UpdateAllNumpages, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click UpdateAllNumpages, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2.
