You cannot install a Windows operating system from the MSDN DVD (873308)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot install a Microsoft Windows operating system from the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) DVD.

CAUSE

The operating system installers on the MSDN DVD use some shared files to complete the installation process. These shared files must already be present in specific folders on the computer. However, these files are not present if the computer does not already have a Windows operating system installed.

RESOLUTION

To install a Windows operating system from the MSDN DVD, one of the following must be true:
  • The computer has a Windows operating system installed.
  • The computer is configured to start from a DVD.

MORE INFORMATION

You may also experience similar problem if you try to install a Windows operating system by using a CD-ROM that was created by using the source files from the MSDN DVD.
