You receive the "Error 1706" error message when you try to start Money (873279)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Money, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product (Microsoft Money <version number>). The Windows installer can not continue.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Group Policy settings on your computer prevent access to the required installation files.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Change the Group Policy settings on your Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer

  1. Log on to your computer by using an account that has administrative permissions.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  3. Under Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Installer.
  4. Double-click Enable user to browse for source while elevated, click Enabled, click to select the Check to force setting on, uncheck to force setting off check box, and then click OK.
  5. Double-click Enable user to use media source while elevated, click, Enabled, click to select the Check to force setting on, uncheck to force setting off check box, and then click OK.
  6. Quit Group Policy, and then restart your computer.

Method 2: Configure the registry settings on your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type AllowLockdownMedia, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify, type 1, and then click OK.
  6. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

  7. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  8. Type AllowLockdownBrowse, and then press ENTER.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Modify, type 1, and then click OK.
