SYMPTOMS

When you open a document that contains tracked changes in Microsoft Word 2002, the document may open in Final view instead of in the expected Final Showing Markup view. Therefore, you may not know that the document contains revisions.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Save preview picture option is turned on in the properties of the Word 2002 document.

RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Word 2002 post-Service Pack 3 Hotfix Package that is dated June 25, 2004. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section to set the ShowMarkupOpenSave registry key and to enable the hotfix for existing documents.

Note The ShowMarkupOpenSave registry key is not needed for any new documents you create after you install this hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

To turn on the Save preview picture option in a Word 2002 document, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word 2002, and then open your document.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties.
  3. On the Summary tab, click to select the Save preview picture check box.
  4. Click OK to close the document Properties dialog box.

To enable this hotfix for existing documents, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word 2002.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type ShowMarkupOpenSave, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click ShowMarkupOpenSave, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
