You cannot use Group Policy to reinstall a program in Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 (872969)

SYMPTOMS

When a Local Administrator uses the Add or Remove Programs (Appwiz.cpl) Control Panel item to remove a program that was installed by using Group Policy, you cannot use the same Group Policy Object (GPO) to reinstall the program.

CAUSE

To prevent the GPO from redeploying the removed program, the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel does not remove the application management extension information that is associated with the Group Policy.

WORKAROUND

To redeploy the removed program, manually reinstall the program on the client computer.

Alternatively, you can modify the Windows registry so that you can use Group Policy to reinstall the program. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\AppMgmt

  3. In the AppMgmt subkey, locate the subkey for the program that you want to reinstall.

    Note To find the program, view the value of the Deployment Name entry.
  4. Right-click the subkey for the program that you want to reinstall, click Delete, and then click OK.
  5. Quit Registry Editor.
