SYMPTOMS

When you search for a folder in Microsoft Windows XP, the found folders icon changes to a document icon.

CAUSE

This problem may occur after you install the security update that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

Search Companion is a service that lets you search for files and folders on your computer, on any local network, or on the Internet. You can access Search Companion by clicking Start and then clicking Search. If Search Companion is running before you apply this hotfix, the hotfix installation may replace data that will cause Search Companion to function incorrectly. To resolve this problem, you can restart your computer.
