The delta package that is replicated to child sites is the same size as the original source package after SMS 2003 package delta replication (872943)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You experience the following symptoms on a computer that is running Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003:
  • After SMS 2003 package delta replication, the delta package that is replicated to child sites is the same size as the original source package.
  • The size of the compressed delta packages that are contained in the SMSPKG folder on the SMS computer are the same size as the original compressed source .PKG file although no package source files were changed between source version updates.
Note The SMSPKG folder name typically has the following format:

site_code five-digit_package_number.DLT.package_source_version

For example, the folder may be named AAA00001.DLT.2.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the SMS Distribution Manager component detects file attribute changes as file version changes. For example, if a backup program changes the archive attribute of a file, the SMS Distribution Manager component detects the attribute change as an update to the file.

To consume less network bandwidth, SMS delta replication is designed to replicate only the updates that are made to the package source, instead of replicating the entire package again. For example, if you add or replace files in a source package and then update distribution points, SMS creates a compressed package delta file that contains only those files that are added or changed.

However, the SMS Distribution Manager component also detects file attribute changes as file version changes. For example, if the archive attribute of a file is changed, the file is added to the delta package and forwarded to all child sites.

This problem occurs if there are changes to the archive attributes on package source files between source version updates. The archive attribute change on a file in the package source forces that file into the delta package. The file is then forwarded to all child sites.
