Your DHCP server may offer an IP address that is not from the correct scope in Windows 2000 (872765)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

Your Microsoft Windows 2000-based Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server may offer leases with incorrect IP addresses to DHCP clients. Specifically, the affected IP addresses may not be from the same DHCP scope that is configured for that DHCP server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when a DHCP client is moved to a different domain while the DHCP offer is still active. In this scenario, the DHCP server offers the old IP address to the DHCP client. Because the DHCP client resides in a new domain, the IP address is no longer correct for that DHCP client.
