- When you type certain established stock symbols in an Office XP document and then press SPACEBAR, the symbol is not recognized by the smart tags feature. This issue occurs because the Stocks.dat and the Stocks.xml files are either missing or out-of-date.

MSN Financial Symbols smart tag does not recognize some ticker symbols
Follow these steps to turn on the options for financial symbols in the smart tag recognizer in an Office XP program, such as Word 2002 or Excel 2002:- Start the Office XP program.
- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
- On the Smart Tags tab, follow these steps:
- Click to select the Label data with smart tags check box.
- Click to select the Smart tag lists (MSN MoneyCentral Financial Symbols) check box, and then click OK.

Office XP updates and patches released after September 2002 may require Windows Installer 2.0
- The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix with Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or with Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). However, Microsoft has not tested this fix on Office XP SP2 to the same extent as on Office XP Service Pack 3. If you install this hotfix on a computer with Office XP SP2 installed, some file conflicts might occur. Microsoft supports this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
