You are prompted to enter your user name and your password when you open an Office document in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or in Windows SharePoint Services (871155)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services

SYMPTOMS

If the following conditions are true when you click either a Microsoft Office 2003 document or a Microsoft Office XP document, a Connect to ServerName dialog box appears on the screen:
  • The Office 2003 or the Office XP document is stored in a document library.
  • The document library is stored either in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site or in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site.
  • The web servers are part of an intranet or extranet.
Additionally, you are prompted to enter your user name and your password even though you already entered your user name and your password to access the portal site or the Windows SharePoint Services Web site.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the virtual server in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 is configured to use Basic authentication. Your user name and your password do not pass seamlessly from Microsoft Internet Explorer to the Office program. By design, this issue occurs in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, configure the virtual server in IIS 6.0 to use Integrated Windows authentication instead of Basic authentication. To enable Integrated Windows authentication and to disable Basic authentication for a virtual server in IIS 6.0, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand ServerName, and then expand Web Sites.
  3. Right-click the virtual server that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Directory Security tab.
  5. Under Authentication and access control, click Edit.
  6. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, click to clear the Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text check box, and then click to select the Integrated Windows authentication check box.
  7. Click OK two times.
  8. If the Inheritance Overrides dialog box is displayed on the screen, click the nodes that you want, and then click OK. For example, to apply the new authentication settings to all the child nodes that are listed in the Child Nodes box, click Select All, and then click OK.
  9. Quit Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
