This article describes how to configure the number of licenses in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 by using the SQL Server Licensing Setup utility in Control Panel.

To modify the number of licenses in SQL Server 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click SQL Server 2000 Licensing Setup.
  2. Under Licensing Mode, increase or decrease the number of devices or processors according to your license agreement.

    Note In the SQL Server 2000 Licensing Setup utility, the licensing mode that appears is the mode that you selected when you set up SQL Server 2000. You cannot change the mode in the SQL Server 2000 Licensing Setup utility.
  3. Click Continue

When you click the Per Seat for mode in the SQL Server Licensing Setup utility, you license SQL Server 2000 for a specified number of devices. A device is defined as any device that is running a SQL Server program that connects to an instance of SQL Server 2000. A computer workstation is an example of a device.

When you click the Processor License for mode in the SQL Server Licensing Setup utility, you license SQL Server 2000 for specified number of processors. A processor is defined as a CPU that is installed on a computer that is running an instance of SQL Server 2000. Therefore, a computer with multiple processors requires multiple processor licenses.
