CAUSE
This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
- An application programming interface (API) in Windows 2000 SP4 queries for a REG_MULTI_SZ registry value that is NULL.
- There is a NULL value under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\i8042prt\Parameters registry key.
Note This issue occurs specifically with the Japanese-language version of Windows 2000. However, it may also occur with any language version of a slipstream version of Windows 2000 SP4.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, obtain the following hotfix. Integrate the files that are contained in this hotfix with the installation source files that you are using to install Windows 2000. Then, install Windows 2000 again.
