A MOM 2000 agent that is manually installed may not use the encryption setting that you specify (867698)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2000

SYMPTOMS

If you manually install a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 agent, the agent may not use the encryption setting that you specify. For example, if you configure a manually installed agent to use encrypted communication, the agent may instead use unencrypted communication.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because MOM 2000 does not support a combination of encrypted and unencrypted agents on a single DCAM. MOM 2000 agents that are manually installed always use the global communication setting of the Consolidator.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, install a separate DCAM for each communication setting that you want to use.

MORE INFORMATION

The manually installed agent stores the encryption setting in the following registry location, where configuration group name is the name of your MOM 2000 configuration group:

HKLM\Software\Mission Critical Software\OnePoint\Configurations\configuration group name\Operations\Agent\Consolidators\SecurityLevel

A value of 1 indicates that the agent uses encrypted communication. By default, encrypted communication uses port 1270. A value of 0 indicates that the agent uses unencrypted communication. By default, unencrypted communication uses port 51515.

To view the ports for encrypted and unencrypted communication, open the MOM global communications properties. Then, click the Communications tab. For more information, see the "Configuring Agents" topic in chapter 8 of the MOM 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Operations Guide. To view this document, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
