Microsoft Security Guidance Kit installation appears to stop responding during step 2 of the installation process (867486)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft Security Guidance Kit (SGK), the installation operation appears to stop responding (hang) at the "Step 2: Click To Install Microsoft Security Guidance Kit" stage of the operation.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Security Guidance Kit copies many files to the Program Files folder on your computer. On a computer that has a slow CPU or on a computer where the hard disk is fragmented, you may experience a significant delay while these files are copied to the local hard disk. Sometimes, this file-copy operation may take 15 minutes or more to complete.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, permit sufficient time for the installation program to install the Security Guidance Kit.
