Two versions of the same document appear when you put a document in a Windows SharePoint Services document library (843577)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services
SYMPTOMSTwo versions of a document are created when you put a
document in a document library on a server that is running Microsoft Windows
SharePoint Services.
This problem occurs when you drag the document into the document library. This
problem also occurs when you copy the document and then paste the document into
the document library.CAUSE This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- The document library is on a server that is running Windows
SharePoint Services.
- The document library is in Explorer view.
- The document library has the Document Versions feature
enabled.
If these conditions are true when you put a document in the
document library, the following two requests are sent to the server that is
running Windows
SharePoint Services:
- A request is sent to put the document in the document
library.
- A request is sent to set the document properties.
When these requests are sent, the Web Distributed Authoring and
Versioning (WebDAV) redirector makes two different calls to the server while
the WebDAV redirector is uploading the document. Each call creates a new
version of the document. WORKAROUND To work around this problem, you must use the Upload Document link in a view of a document library other than the Explorer view. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Upload Document.
- Click Browse, and then locate the
document that you want to put in the document library.
- Click Open.
- Fill in any properties that are required for the documents in
the document library.
- Click Save and Close.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
