When you view the Messages pending submission queue by using Exchange System Manager on the Exchange computer, the e-mail message may appear to be stuck in the queue.

A message could not be virus scanned - this operation will be retried later. It does not occur if the message is digitally signed and encrypted.CAUSEThis problem may occur when the following conditions are true: - You run an antivirus program on the Exchange computer that uses the Antivirus API (AVAPI), such as McAfee GroupShield 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange.
- The AVAPI-based antivirus program is configured to use transport scanning.
- You send a digitally signed message as a user who is hosted on the Exchange computer that is running the antivirus program.
RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. To work around this problem, turn off AVAPI transport scanning on the Exchange computer. To do this, see your AVAPI software documentation for more information. Important If you turn off transport antivirus scanning, we recommend that you turn on information store-level antivirus scanning on your Exchange computer.
Alternatively, you can turn off transport scanning by setting the following Microsoft Windows registry entry to a value of 0: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\TransportAVAPI\Enabled Note A value of 1 indicates that transport scanning is turned on. To turn off transport scanning by setting the registry entry to a value of 0, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\TransportAVAPI - Right-click Enabled in the right pane, click Modify, type 0, and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
