Only part of an e-mail message is delivered when the message is sent through the Exchange SMTP Connector on your Exchange 2000 Server computer (843401)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

When your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer sends an e-mail message to an external Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server, the external SMTP server only receives a part of the message. Therefore, the recipient receives an incomplete message.

The e-mail message may remain stuck in the delivery queue of your Exchange 2000 computer. If it does, your Exchange 2000 computer continually retries to send the message to the external SMTP server. Every time that a retry occurs, the external SMTP server only receives a part of the message. The external SMTP server sends the partial message to the recipient multiple times.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • Exchange 2000 is running on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer.
  • The e-mail message contains several lines in the message body that start with a period.
  • The e-mail message is sent through the Exchange SMTP Connector.
In this case, the Exchange SMTP Connector may incorrectly send data that indicates the end of the DATA command in the middle of a data sequence.
