CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You used the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge program (Exmerge.exe) to migrate data from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes in a different Exchange organization.
  • During the Exmerge.exe process, you selected the option to extract associated folder messages from the source information store and to import those messages to the target information store. For example, in the Source Server dialog box, you clicked Options, and then you clicked to select the Associated folder messages check box on the Data tab.

Note Associated folder messages are used to store folder rules and views.
In this scenario, when you try to move a mailbox that has been migrated by using Exmerge.exe, the move operation is not successful if the mailbox contains a message copy rule or a message move rule that is corrupted.

Hotfix installation information

After you install this hotfix, the following new registry values are introduced:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersPrivate

Note This value contols whether Exchange Server ignores a failure to move a copy rule or a move rule.

Entry name: Ignore Bad Copy/Move Rule
Entry type: REG_DWORD
Entry data: 0 or 1

Note This value controls whether Exchange Server ignores a bad OOF rule.

Entry name: Ignore Bad OOF Rule
Entry type: REG_DWORD
Entry data: 0 or 1

If this Ignore Bad Copy/Move Rule registry entry is set to a value other than zero, Exchange Server ignores a failure to move a copy rule or a move rule. When you enable this Ignore Bad Copy/Move Rule registry entry, the following new event is generated when Exchange Server ignores a failure to move a copy rule or a move rule:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
Event Category: Move Mailbox
Event ID: 8534
User: UserName
Computer: ComputerName
Description: A problem occurred while getting the properties for Copy/Move rule for Test User. Error code: -2147221233. Try to clear the rules or run ISINTEG to check for any problem in the database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (BUG241341)". For more information, click http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, try to remove the copy rules or the move rules from the mailbox before you move that mailbox. Additionally, run the Isinteg utility against the mailbox store to determine whether any problems exist in the database.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
