You cannot schedule a remote job by using the AT command from a Windows XP-based computer (843250)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003
  • Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2002
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you try to schedule a job on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer by using the at command from a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
The authentication service is unknown.
When you try to schedule a job on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer or on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer by using the at command from a Windows XP-based computer that is in an untrusted domain, you may receive the following error message:
Access is denied.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You install the MS04-011 security update on your Windows XP-based computer.

For additional information about the MS04-011 security update, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

835732 MS04-011: Security update for Microsoft Windows

The MS04-011 security update includes the following changes:
    • The security update changes the remote procedure call (RPC) bind on the client in Netapi32.dll when a call is made to the NetScheduleJobAdd function.
    • The security update includes a call to the RpcBindingSetAuthInfoEx function that has the RPC_C_AUTHN_LEVEL_PKT_PRIVACY authentication-level constant. This call matches the server-side call to the RpcServerRegisterAuthInfo function that has the RPC_C_AUTHN_WINNT authentication-level constant.
Because the Windows NT 4.0 Schedule service (Atsvc.exe) does not register a security provider, Atsvc cannot accept the authenticated call. Windows 2000-based computers and Windows Server 2003-based computers that are in untrusted domains cannot accept the authenticated call when your authentication credentials cannot be validated.
  • You try to schedule a job on an untrusted Windows 2000-based computer or on an untrusted Windows Server 2003-based computer from a Windows XP-based computer after you install the KB831003 hotfix.
