MIF files build up in the Badmifs folder, and SMS client inventory information is missing in Systems Management Server 2003 (843219)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Management Information Format (MIF) files build up in the drive_letter:\Sms\Inboxes\Dataldr.box\Badmifs folder.
  • Some client inventory information is not added to the SMS site database.
  • The SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component reports a status message that is similar to the following in the Status Message Viewer:
Compilation failed - Attribute name already used for this group on line xxx
  • The drive_letter:\Sms\Logs\Dataldr.log file contains entries that are similar to the following:
    ~Started the machine MIF processing thread, thread ID = E4 Processing file filename.MIF Renamed file to process from drive_letter:\SMS\inboxes\dataldr.box\process\filename.MIF to drive_letter:\SMS\inboxes\dataldr.box\process\filename.MIF ~Compilation failed~Attribute name already used for this group on line linenumber~~ Could not convert MIF file drive_letter:\SMS\inboxes\dataldr.box\process\filename.MIF for SQL processing STATMSG: ID=2700 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER" SYS=computername SITE=SiteCode PID=1868 TID=228 GMTDATE=DateTime ISTR0="driveleeter:\SMS\inboxes\dataldr.box\process\filename.MIF" ISTR1="" ISTR2="" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0 ~Cannot process MIF filename.MIF, moving it to drive_letter:\SMS\inboxes\dataldr.box\BADMIFS\filename.MIF

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component processes an .mif file that contains the following text:Value = unsupported The SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component cannot process the "unsupported" keyword as defined by the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF). Therefore, the SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component stops processing the .mif file that contains the unsupported keyword. Then, the SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component moves the .mif file to the drive_letter:\Sms\Inboxes\Dataldr.box\Badmifs folder.
