You receive an error message when you use Project 2003 to open a project that is stored in Microsoft Project 2002 (843087)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003
  • Microsoft Project Server 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to Microsoft Project Server 2002 by using Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003, and then you open an enterprise component, such as an enterprise project or the Enterprise Resource Pool, you may receive the following message:

You are opening projects or resources from a Microsoft Project Server 2002 database that has not been upgraded to contain the additional fields required by the new features in Project 2003. Until the database is upgraded, you will only be able to open projects and resources as read-only. If you want to save changes back to Microsoft Project Server 2002, click Help for information about how to upgrade the database tables.

When you click OK in the message, the enterprise component opens as read-only. Therefore, if you open a project, you cannot save the project to Microsoft Project 2002.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Microsoft Project Server 2002 database does not contain certain fields that Project Professional 2003 requires.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade the Microsoft Project Server 2002 database so that it contains the fields that Project Professional 2003 requires. To upgrade the Microsoft Project Server 2002 database, download and run the Project Professional 2003 Database Compatibility Scripts for Microsoft Project Server 2002. MORE INFORMATION

Because of the new features in Project Professional 2003, you must make some minor modifications to the Microsoft Project Server 2002 database schema before you can use Project Professional 2003 to save projects to Microsoft Project Server 2002. You can use Project Professional 2003 to open and to view projects from an unmodified Microsoft Project Server 2002 database. However, if you want to make changes or to create new projects in Project Professional 2003, and then save them back to Microsoft Project Server 2002, you must download and run the Project Professional 2003 Database Compatibility Scripts for Microsoft Project Server 2002.
