The Game Controllers item in Control Panel does not list a game controller that is plugged into the game port (842956)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you disconnect a game controller from the game port on your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer and then connect a different game controller to the same game port, the first game controller is listed as an installed game controller in the Game Controllers item in Control Panel. However, the second game controller is not listed.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if Windows XP does not detect the new game controller.

WORKAROUND

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Game Controllers.
  3. Under Controller, click the device that is connected to the game port, and then click Remove.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Under Game controllers, click the device that you want to use, and then click OK two times.
