You cannot save your password or type a Microsoft Passport Network password in the Password box in Money (842868)

SYMPTOMS

If you help secure your Microsoft Money file with a Microsoft Passport Network password, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms when you start Money:
  • You cannot type a password in the Password box on the Welcome screen when you start Money.
  • You cannot save your Passport Network password in Money. You must type a password every time that you start Money, even though you click to select the Remember password check box.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if a registry subkey that stores passwords is damaged.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
To resolve this problem, delete the registry subkey that stores the passwords for Microsoft Windows. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

  3. Click Permissions, and then click Advanced.
  4. Under Permission entries, verify that Full Control permission appears.
  5. Under Apply To, verify that This key and subkeys appears, and then click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box.
  6. Click Apply, click Yes, and then click OK two times.
  7. Expand the registry subkey that you located in step 2, right-click the subkey that starts with S-1-5-21, and then click Delete.
  8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
Start Money, and then try to help secure your Money file by using your Passport Network password.
