FIX: Changes to the member properties structure in SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services can cause incorrect results or service failures (842707)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services 64 bit

Bug #: 14347 (Plato7x)

SYMPTOMS

After you have made structural changes to the member properties of a dimension in Analysis Services, the following behavior may occur:
  • Queries that reference the member properties of the dimension may return incorrect results.
  • Queries that reference the member properties of the dimension may return "#ERR".
  • The Analysis Services service may crash when the Analysis Services service, or Msmdsrv.exe process, tries to run the query.

CAUSE

When structural changes are made to the member properties of a dimension in Analysis Services, the server must rebuild the member properties for the dimension. If a member exists in the multidimensional OLAP (MOLAP) dimension structure, but the relational source record for the dimension member no longer exists, the member properties for that member cannot be retrieved. Therefore, the dimension member structure and the member properties structure are no longer synchronized, and the behavior that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section occurs.
