ISA Server 2004 does not maintain client credentials between requests (842686)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2004, Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

You use Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Windows-based computer that has the Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server Web proxy client installed. When you connect to an ISA Server 2004 computer, the ISA Server computer may not maintain your credentials, and you may have to reauthenticate the next time that your client makes a request.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because ISA Server 2004 closes the connection when a client makes a requeston a network where the following conditions are true:
  • The Require all users to authenticate option in the Authentication dialog box for the internal network is turned on.
  • The ISA Server computer must connect to an upstream ISA Server computer or to a Microsoft Proxy 2.0 server to complete the Web proxy client request.
In this case, the connection is always closed for a client connect request that requires authentication. However, when the Require all users to authenticate option is not turned on and the initial connection is made, the initial Web proxy client request is kept alive.

This behavior is different from the behavior of Microsoft Proxy 2.0 and earlier versions of ISA Server.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
