The SHIFT key on the Tablet PC Input Panel tool does not respond after you resume from the Hibernate state (842515)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

SYMPTOMS

The SHIFT key on the Tablet PC Input Panel tool does not respond after you resume from the Hibernate state. This behavior occurs after you use the tablet pen to put the Tablet PC in the Hibernate state.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the on-screen logon keyboard does not update internal variables. The internal variables keep track of the keyboard state when the Tablet PC is put in the Hibernate state.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Connect a physical keyboard to the Tablet PC, and then press the SHIFT key on the keyboard. You can expect to successfully enter your password and log on.
  • Immediately after you select the Hibernate state, click SHIFT on Input Panel. This action reverses the SHIFT control. You must click SHIFT within several seconds, before Input Panel is no longer available and before the Tablet PC hibernates.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Using Power Options to hibernate

  1. Tap Start, and then tap Control Panel.
  2. Tap Performance and Maintenance, and then tap Power Options.
  3. Tap the Advanced tab.
  4. Under the Power buttons section, select the option that you want to cause the Tablet PC to Hibernate.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Click Start, click Shut Down.
  2. Press and hold the SHIFT key on your physical keyboard. This action causes the Standby button to change to a Hibernate button if you are not in a domain.
  3. While you continue to hold the SHIFT key, click Hibernate.
  4. When the Preparing to hibernate message no longer appears, release the SHIFT key. The Tablet PC hibernates.
  5. Wake up the Tablet PC, and then try to log on by using the tablet pen.

The SHIFT key is locked in Input Panel and you cannot log on.
Note If you restart the Tablet PC, you lose any data that you did not save before the Tablet PC hibernated.
