You may receive an error message or the Setup program may stop responding when you install Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (842466)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Cannot run dcpromo because the Sysvol partition is not formatted as NTFS.

You may receive this error message even if the volume that contains the Sysvol folder is already formatted with the NTFS file system.

If you try to upgrade a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain controller or a Microsoft Small Business Server 2000-based computer to Small Business Server 2003, the Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup program may stop responding or quit unexpectedly after the Component Selection page appears.

If you manually run the dcpromo command while you set up a new Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer, you may be able to successfully install Active Directory. However, if you rerun the Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup program, the Setup program may stop responding or quit unexpectedly after the Component Selection page appears. When the Setup program stops responding or quits unexpectedly, you may not receive an error message.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because there is a conflict between the Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup program and the device driver for the Intel 82801ER SATA RAID controller. Motherboards that use the Intel 865G chipset or the Intel 875P chipset include this kind of SATA RAID controller. For example, the Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 motherboard uses the Intel 875P chipset. Therefore, the Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 motherboard includes the Intel 82801ER SATA RAID controller.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, installing version 5.1 or later of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software before you running the Setup program for Small Business Server. To download the latest version of of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager software, visit the following Web site:

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, convert the volume that contains the Sysvol folder from a basic disk to a dynamic disk.

Note By default, the Sysvol folder is located in the following folder:

C:\Windows

To convert a volume from a basic disk to a dynamic disk, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
In the Computer Management snap-in, click Disk Management.
In the right pane, right-click the Disk number box, and then click Convert to Dynamic Disk.

Disk 0
Basic
100 GB
Online
