INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Word 2002 issue that is fixed in the Word 2002 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package that is dated May 17, 2004.

Issues that are fixed by the hotfix package

The following issue is fixed in this hotfix package, but it was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • When you send a Microsoft Word document as an attachment to an e-mail message in Microsoft Word 2002, the attachment loses the .doc file name extension, and it is no longer associated with Word.

    This issue occurs when the following conditions are true:
    • The Word document (attachment) was saved to the users Temporary folder. For example, the Word document was saved to the following folder:

      drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp

    • The file name contains multiple periods as in the following example:

      Test.test.doc

  • The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office XP SP3 installed.

  • The optimized version of this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later.

  • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix with Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or with Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, we have not tested this fix on Office XP SP1 or Office XP SP2 to the same extent as on Office XP Service Pack 3. If you install this hotfix on a computer with Office XP SP1 or Office XP SP2 installed, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
