Add or Remove Programs tool appears to stop responding after you remove the security update that is documented in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-015 (842253)

SYMPTOMS

After you remove Windows XP Hotfix - KB840374 (the security update that is documented in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-015) from a computer that is running a Japanese version of Windows XP, the Add or Remove Programs tool may appear to stop responding. Nothing happens when you click an item in the Add or Remove Programs window, and you may not be able to close the Add or Remove Programs window.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, right-click the Add or Remove Programs icon on the taskbar, click Close, and then restart Add or Remove Programs.

To avoid this problem, use the Spuninst.exe utility to remove this security update. The Spuninst.exe utility is located in the %Windir%\$NTUninstallKB840374$\Spuninst folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
