SYMPTOMS

When you use the System tool in Control Panel to view the size of a user profile in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the System tool may display a size that is not correct.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the profile size is larger than 4 gigabytes (GB). The maximum size that the System tool can display for a user profile is 4 GB.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use Windows Explorer to view the user profile size. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the following folder, where UserName is the user for the profile that you want to view:

    Drive:\Documents and Settings\UserName

  3. Right-click the UserName folder, and then click Properties.
Note This method does not include the Exclude directories in roaming profiles folders' sizes in the calculation of the user profile size. The profile size that appears in the System tool is the size of the profile less the size of all the Exclude directories in roaming profiles folders. The Exclude directories in roaming profiles folders are stored in the ExcludeProfileDirs registry entry that is located in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

This information is also available in the Ntuser.ini file that is located in the root folder of the user's profile. The following path is the path of that file:

Drive:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Ntuser.ini
