"Error Applying Security" error message when you try to create a new folder in a disk volume on a Windows 2000-based computer (842206)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new folder in a disk volume on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you receive the following error message:
Error Applying Security
An error occurred attempting to read the directory:
C:\path name

The system cannot find the file specified.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions check box is selected for the new folder. When this option is selected, the new folder inherits the access control setting from the disk volume. These inherited settings overwrite any settings at the folder level.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not select the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions check box in the Access Control Settings for New Folder dialog box when you create a new folder in a disk volume.
