You cannot see all the RIPrep images that are stored on a RIS server that is running Windows Server 2003 (842198)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you start a Pre-Boot eXecution Environment (PXE) client and connect to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running Remote Installation Services (RIS), you cannot see all the Remote Installation Preparation (RIPrep) images that are stored on the server.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows Server 2003-based RIS servers perform hardware abstraction layer (HAL) filtering to make sure that RIPrep images that are not compatible with the client computer do not appear.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, create a RIPrep image that is compatible with the client computer.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is intended to make sure that you use a correct HAL-based image to complete the installation.

Note The Winnt.sif file is located in the Remoteinstall\Oschooser\i386 folder. If this file is corrupt or missing, RIPrep images may not appear in the list of images.
