Foreign connectors cannot send or receive e-mail after you rename the administrative group in Exchange Server 2003 (842097)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you rename an administrative group in Exchange Server 2003, foreign connectors that are contained in the administrative group do not send or receive e-mail. For example, the Lotus Notes connector is a foreign connector.

Additionally, you may receive error messages that are similar to the following in the application event log on the Exchange Server 2003 computer:
Source: MSExchangeNOTES
Type: Warning
Category: Notes Interface
Event ID: 8302

{Invalid configuration}: Could not get the attribute 'whenChanged' from the object 'CN=Connector for Lotus Notes (MIGTI4CEX),CN=Connections,CN=RG2,CN=Routing Groups,CN=AG2,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=MigTidom1,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=MigTidom1,DC=extest,DC=microsoft,DC=com'. It will be retried after the checking interval 600 seconds.

Event ID: 9297

The description for Event ID ( 9297 ) in Source ( MSExchangeMTA ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 229, 0X80040920,

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the foreign connectors read the name of the administrative group when the Exchange services start. When you change the name of the administrative group, the foreign connectors cannot identify the administrative group by its new name until the Exchange services are restarted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must restart all the Exchange services on the Exchange Server 2003 computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the Services snap-in, right-click each Exchange service that has a Status of Started, and then click Restart.
After the Exchange services restart, the foreign connectors correctly identify the new administrative group name.
