"Illegal path format" error message when you change the name of the folder that stores message tracking log files in Exchange Server 2003 (842094)

SYMPTOMS

If you enable message tracking in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and then change the name of the folder where the message tracking log files are stored, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Illegal path format.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the name of the folder contains certain single-byte character set (SBCS) characters. For example, this issue may occur if the name of the folder contains half-width Japanese katakana characters that use either the 0xff9e Unicode hexadecimal sequence or the 0xff9f Unicode hexadecimal sequence.

This issue may also occur if the name of the folder contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters. You cannot use DBCS characters in path names in Exchange Server 2003.

WORKAROUND

When you change the name of the folder that stores the message tracking log files, use a name that does not contain DBCS characters or half-width Japanese katakana characters that use either the 0xff9e or the 0xff9f Unicode hexadecimal sequence.
