Word Art does not display some Unicode characters in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac (841986)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a document that contains Word Art text in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Word cannot open the document. Try one or more of the following: On the File menu, click Open to open the document. Make sure the document is a valid Word document. (name of the document)
Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might not be a valid Word document (name of the document)

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Word Art text contains Unicode characters. Some Unicode characters cannot be used in Word Art in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac.

WORKAROUND

Follow these steps to work around this problem:
  1. Open the document in another program, and them remove the Word Art text.
  2. Open the document in Word 2004 for Mac, and then replace the Word Art text that you deleted with text that does not include Unicode characters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac.
