Closed, embedded Word object that contains a VBA macro in an Office program consumes 100 precent of CPU time after you quit Word 2002 (841886)

SYMPTOMS

After you quit Microsoft Word, Word may still be loaded in memory. Additionally, if you view the Processes tab in Task Manager, you may find that Word is using 100 percent of the CPU time.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • You start Word with no active document.
  • You programmatically activate an embedded Word document that is contained in a document in another Microsoft Office program.
  • The embedded Word document is opened for "in-place" editing in the other Office program.
  • You run a macro that makes a change to the embedded Word document by using the Border object or the Borders collection.

RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Word 2002 Hotfix Package that is dated May 21, 2004. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the CreateBordersObjRCFix registry key and to activate the hotfix.

To this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Word 2002.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options\

  4. After you select the key that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type CreateBordersObjRCFix, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click CreateBordersObjRCFix, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
