You cannot add device drivers during the text-mode part of the Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP Setup program after you press F6 and then S to specify controller drivers or HAL drivers (841813)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

After you press F6 to specify additional mass storage device drivers or hardware abstraction layer (HAL) drivers during the installation of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP, you can press S, and then install those drivers from a floppy disk as you expect. However, when you insert a new floppy disk and then press S to install additional drivers, you experience one of the following symptoms:
  • Windows does not recognize that you inserted a new floppy and displays information from the original floppy.
  • You receive the following error message:
The disk you supplied does not contain relevant support files. Press any key to continue.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the original floppy disk is inserted when you start the Windows Setup program. For example, you experience this issue if you insert the floppy in the computer, and then start the computer by using the Windows CD. When the floppy disk is inserted before Windows prompts you to insert it, Windows caches the contents of the floppy disk. Therefore, when you insert additional floppy disks, the contents of those additional floppy disks are not read into the operating system's memory.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not insert the floppy disk that contains your mass storage controller drivers or HAL drivers until you are prompted to insert it. For example, after you press F6 and then S to specify additional drivers, wait until you receive the following message before you insert the floppy disk that contains the device drivers into the computer's floppy disk drive:

Insert the Manufacturer Supplied Floppy
